In light of the news of Spencer Dinwiddie being named a finalist for NBA Most Improved Player, it is important that the Brooklyn Nets do not mess this up.

Saying that there is a lot of dysfunction that has haunted the Nets since their arrival in Brooklyn does not even begin to describe the journey this team has had. From giving up what feels like endless draft picks for aging, past their prime stars, to finally peaking during the “Big 3 Era” of the Miami Heat, the Brooklyn Nets have stood little to no chance.

Now, they are slowly turning things around. They are finally ushering in the post-Billy King era with Sean Marks finally having some assets to work with. Brooklyn now has an identity as a three-point shooting team which is the new status-quo in the NBA. And now, finally, they might have someone who could be an integral part of their team for the foreseeable future in Spencer Dinwiddie.

Not only is Dinwiddie the best thing to come out of Colorado since Chauncey Billups, he is one of the best things the Nets have going for them right now.

The honor of being named one of the finalists for NBA Most Improved Player is just the beginning of what could be. Dinwiddie’s NBA journey destined him to be a Net. Perhaps that is the best part about it. Injuries, trades, and other teams being quick to give up on him got Dinwiddie to Brooklyn.

All those reasons are why the Nets cannot mess this up. Dinwiddie is a solid player. He literally might win an award for getting better and showing improvement. They need to keep working with him.

Winning this award combined with already having won the Skills Challenge during 2018 All-Star weekend would be personal accolades. However, Dinwiddie has something to do that’s much more important; be a major piece to a rebuild that is almost complete.

Brooklyn’s former ownership, which is now in transition to change, used to be dreadful. Horrible decisions never let them improve naturally. Star players used to be miserable and were never in their prime while here. Maybe Brook Lopez was an exception.

Dinwiddie can be the next guy. He is setting himself up for high expectations but has the potential right now to be the next star for this team. He is not homegrown but can be the first star still in a Nets uniform during his prime for what feels like decades now.

The Nets front office cannot mess this up. They are finally going to have draft picks soon and be done with their old demons. If they value Dinwiddie, which they should, they need to keep him happy. They need to keep him in the loop on where their rebuild is going, keep playing the NBA game, ask for his input, and continue to coach him well.

Dinwiddie still has a few more years left on his current deal to continue to improve and prove he can one day be an integral part of this team. He needs to do his job to maintain where he is. However, like we have seen so many times before, the Nets cannot mess this up. This has a chance to be a steal.

Does Dinwiddie owe the Nets anything? Probably, because they are the main reason he is not in the G-League. The team needs to keep him thinking that by doing this right.

The Brooklyn Nets are up to some potentially big things and Dinwiddie can play a huge part in it over the next 5-10 years. The Nets are light years ahead of their fellow New Yorkers, the Knicks, and that is saying something.

Spencer Dinwiddie has a high ceiling now. The Nets cannot mess this up.
