Hockey players, in my eyes, remain the most loyal out of all the major sports. Tavares could simply test the market to slightly spike his dollar value but still stay.
The Islanders are the only team in the NHL that knows what he brings on and off the ice too.
Now, despite the Isles being destined for another rebuild, Tavares could stay around to give input and thoughts on what he wants. By re-signing they would owe him something other than money. Being a guy they go to and ask about decisions or something can provide that.
The Islanders will obviously make an attempt to keep their prized possession. Tavares is the also someone who knows something the fans or journalists might know in terms of direction of the franchise.
