Tampa Bay Lightning

More from Empire Writes Back

JT going to Tampa is likely based on whether or not the Lightning can win the cup this year. They are only a few wins away too.

If Tampa does win their second cup ever, they will likely not even pursue Tavares at all.

But, if they do not win it this year they should pursue him heavily. When teams come up just short they always try to get that one last thing to put them over the edge before attempting a rebuild.

Since the Lightning are close, if they lose they might go after JT to be that piece they need.

Already having Steven Stamkos, Tampa could bring in JT to be another top-line guy along with Nikita Kucherov. With a great goalie in Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tavares’ inevitable production will rarely go to waste.

There are a lot of moving parts here and the Lightning will need to shell out a lot of money soon to their other stars.

If Tavares wants to win now and play along with an already elite line, Tampa would be a smart place to sign.
