Matt Harvey looked his unhittable former self in his Cincinnati Reds debut. In order to avoid heartbreak, New York Mets fans shouldn’t watch Harvey for the rest of the season.

The New York Mets had no choice but to designate Matt Harvey for assignment. He was ineffective in the starting rotation and somehow was worse as a reliever. He refused to go to the minor leagues, thus his time in the Big Apple came to a close.

New York traded Harvey to the Cincinnati Reds for Devin Mesoraco, a backup catcher who was an improvement over what the Mets already had behind the plate. However, when it comes to upside, Harvey clearly has more. If the Reds can get Harvey back to 2013 form or even 2015 form, they will be significant winners of this trade.

However, rather than looking at it from the perspective of the Mets being “losers” in this trade if Harvey bounces back, fans should realize that New York had no choice but to move on. If they hung on to Harvey, he would have never regained 2013 or 2015 form. It’s better that the Mets were able to get something in return for Harvey and it’s better that Harvey gets a fresh start.

More from New York Mets

In Harvey’s Reds debut, he threw four innings of one-hit ball with no walks and two strikeouts. After just 55 pitches, Harvey likely had more in the tank, but after finishing his Mets career in the bullpen, he needs to be stretched out before going deep into games again.

If you were a Mets fan watching Harvey’s start on Friday night, you probably didn’t feel too good. Watching the guy who couldn’t get anyone out all of a sudden become unhittable again while wearing a different uniform can be painful. That’s why the best thing for Mets fans to do the rest of the season is to avoid watching Harvey.

No good can come from watching Harvey. If Harvey gets shelled, well that’s expected. And it’s not like the Mets get the last laugh. Mesoraco is a career .233 hitter who hasn’t played more than 56 games in a season since 2014. If Harvey dominates like he did on Friday night, well, Mets fans will not be in a good place.

Don’t watch Harvey. Don’t check the Cincinnati box score. Just avoid the Reds altogether.

New York Mets fans will be in a much better mental state if they take Matt Harvey off their radar for the rest of the season.
