The Miami Marlins helped the New York Yankees make a big-time improvement when they traded Giancarlo Stanton to the Bronx. Now they can help take an inconsistent reliever off their hands.

Kyle Barraclough has quietly been one of baseball’s best relief pitchers over the last few years. Barraclough has a career 2.82 ERA and is a strikeout machine with 242 punchouts in 178.2 innings pitched. In 2018, Barraclough has a 2.30 ERA in 15.2 innings with 23 strikeouts. He would give Aaron Boone multiple middle inning options to go along with Chad Green and Tommy Kahnle. He’s also arbitration eligible through 2021.

More from New York Yankees

Gary Denbo was named the Vice President of Player Development for the Yankees in 2014 after Betances completed his rookie season. Denbo held that position until Derek Jeter made him the Director of Player Development and Scouting for the Miami Marlins this season. Denbo knows Betances and could see the potential to turn him around. If Betances goes back to being a dominant reliever, the Marlins could flip him at next year’s trade deadline to help them continue what could be a long rebuild.

Denbo also knows the New York Yankees farm system and knows the underrated prospects we fans don’t know about. Could Jonathan Loaisiga be one of those underrated prospects? Tough to say, but the Yankees did put him on the 40-man roster this season in order not to lose him in the Rule 5 Draft, so they were fearful some team might steal him.

Loaisiga is a small-statured starting pitcher who may be destined for the big league bullpen. The 5’11, 165 lb. right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA through six starts between High-A and Double-A this year. Loaisiga has great command as evidenced by his 38-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 innings this season. He could help the Marlins down the road whether it’s in the starting rotation or in the bullpen.

Trading Dellin Betances may seem like a panicky overreaction. But if his shaky relief appearances continue, a change of scenery could be best for all parties involved. At least with these trade scenarios, the New York Yankees acquire quality relievers to take his place for their World Series run.
