Week One: at Detroit Lions

More from Empire Writes Back

The 2018 campaign gets underway with a trip to Detroit to face the Lions on Monday Night Football. Will it be Sam Darnold’s debut? You know that some of us hope so. Either way this will be our first look at the 2018 version of the team.

Matt Stafford likes to throw the ball all over the park so this will be a test for the Jets secondary. We will see early signs as to whether or not Trumaine Johnson takes this group to the next level.

Last time these two teams faced off, Detroit beat the Jets at MetLife 24-17 after a Stafford one yard scramble put the game out of reach. The Jets won three straight meetings prior to that one in 2014, including a 23-20 overtime win at Ford Field in 2010.

A week one win is going to be a tough ask from this team. The defense sports a front seven with a lot of new bodies. They will still be getting used to each other. The same goes for the defensive backs. The communication has to be better with Johnson now in the fold, but that takes time.

LeGarrette Blount will make the Detroit running attack better, and the Jets Isaiah Crowell doesn’t cause fear in many opponents. Bilal Powell has been around for one game against the Lions and didn’t make the box score.

Even if the Jets step up in the run defense, Stafford’s passing attack with the likes of Marvin Jones Jr. is very tough to beat. The Jets won’t be able to get it done here.
