New York Giants: A way-too-early look at 2019 NFL Draft targets
Connor McGovern, Guard, Penn State
This one makes plenty of sense for the New York Giants. While they may have snagged Will Hernandez in the second round of this past draft, the right guard position still needs to be addressed, especially once the 2018 season comes to a close.
John Jerry is slated to hit the free agent market in 2019 and, in all honesty, New York would be better off moving on from him. Jerry has been subject to a lot of criticism during his tenure with the Giants and could be considered a replacement-level player at best.
Connor McGovern is believed to be the top guard in the 2019 draft class and would be an excellent upgrade to New York’s offensive line. While he’s not overpowering by any means, the Penn State product makes up for his lack of elite strength with impressive technique that is rarely seen from interior offensive linemen. McGovern is an intelligent blocker who’s quick out of his stance and beats opposing rushers with good leverage rather pure strength.
Also, considering the Giants just selected fellow Nittany Lion Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in this past draft, it never hurts to take a lineman who’s already familiar with the running back he’ll block for.
