The New York Mets have officially done the unthinkable but also inevitable at the same time. The team announced that Matt  Harvey has been designated for assignment.

The New York Mets are designating Matt Harvey for assignment. This news comes as little to no surprise to me because the writing has been on the wall for months now.

However, Matt Harvey is all but officially done with the New York Mets. The team is done with his antics. lack of heart, and inability to understand his role on this team.

I only say that because all the reports of this story include the fact that Matt Harvey was asked to go to the minor leagues but refuse. Perhaps that is the straw that broke the camel’s back, however, the real decline happened after his abysmal play at home vs the Braves his last outing.

More from Empire Writes Back

Harvey has done nothing but be a nuisance since the first pitch of the year for the Mets. He had a good start to begin the year but the decline quickly happened.

Harvey quickly began struggling to even get out of innings. Now, he won’t even have the opportunity to try. Aside from that, once the reports came out that he was out partying in LA it showed he has no intention to do the absolute most he can on his end.

The team kept him around. Mickey Callaway said he would work with him. The New York Mets did their part as an organization to make it work. The only thing Harvey had to do was his part.

He needed to pay the team back. Even if it did not mean returning to his old form he could have been an asset in other ways. Harvey could have been positive and a good teammate. He did not seem to want to do those things.

He also could have been given the cards he was dealt and gamble to win with them. Something he did not do because he refused to go to the minors and even seemed to be displeased with his move to the bullpen.

This is not a column where my sole intention is to bash the Mets or Matt Harvey. However, this one is on him. He is not a major league pitcher right now. He does not have the stuff. But even more importantly, he does not even have the correct attitude.

The injuries, last year’s losing culture, all the changes could be very much to the chagrin of Mr. Harvey, however, he is out of options now regardless. The New York Mets did what they had to do. As a team they have more important things to worry about.

It really is a shame what has happened. But it was obvious it was going to. The Matt Harvey project has failed.

The Mets and the New York market in general need players who prioritize winning and understanding their role on a team. There are no tell-tale signs that Harvey was doing that.

So, the Mets announcing this is the right move. This story finally has an end. Although there is no way of knowing if it is over for good, at least the TEAM can regroup and no one has to worry if MATT HARVEY will regroup.

“The Dark Knight” has turned into “The Dark Good Night.”

Let’s Go Mets!
