Here’s how important David Wright is to Mets history. The Mets began play in 1962, and in their 57 seasons only four men have been named captain of the franchise. Wright is one of them. In fact, in the history of New York Baseball, which dates back to 1876, he’s only the 26th captain to wear a New York baseball uniform.

He was a consummate professional and did everything on the baseball field with class and dignity. Wright exemplifies what it means to be a New York Met.

In his time with the Mets — which is probably over due to spinal stenosis — he was a stalwart at third base. His .955 fielding percentage was decent and he earned the Gold Glove at third base twice for outstanding defense. Wright was a two-time Silver Slugger and a seven-time All-Star. He hit .296/.376/.491 with 658 extra base hits and had 970 RBI.

Not many manned the hot corner with the greatness on defense and offense that Wright did. Unfortunately, due to injury, he will likely fall short of the Baseball Hall of Fame, but Wright is undoubtedly the best third baseman in the history of the team. He’s a must for this team.
