New York Giants: Top 3 remaining needs post-NFL Draft
By Sean Dyer
Cornerback
After originally asking Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to move to free safety, the New York Giants eventually cut the veteran corner after he refused to take a pay cut. DRC was Big Blue’s best slot corner and a better boundary corner than Eli Apple. The Giants now must replace DRC on the depth chart, which they haven’t really done yet.
Janoris Jenkins is locked in as New York’s No. 1 corner, but that’s about the only clarity on the entire cornerback depth chart. Apple has been inconsistent on and off the field, and they brought in a number of depth pieces, none of whom should be trusted to start if Apple isn’t up to the task.
William Gay, Teddy Williams, B.W. Webb, and Curtis Riley were signed to join Donte Deayon and Brandon Dixon on the depth chart. Gay is the only player in that group with NFL starting experience but he is 33 years old and likely just a quality reserve at this point in his 12-year career.
Rodgers-Cromartie is still looking for a job, but that reunion is highly unlikely. Other veteran corners still on the open market include Bashaud Breeland (if he can pass a physical), Jeremy Lane, Kayvon Webster, and Sean Smith.

Undrafted free agent Grant Haley out of Penn State is believed to be a capable slot corner, but a veteran must be added before offseason workouts get into full swing. Eli Apple could surprise people and live up to his first-round billing. However, the Giants must be prepared for him to struggle again and should have a veteran ready to step in.
