New York Giants: Top 3 remaining needs post-NFL Draft
By Sean Dyer
Wide Receiver
The New York Giants said goodbye to Brandon Marshall after one unsuccessful season. Marshall played just five games for Big Blue before landing on injured reserve after having ankle surgery. In those five games, Marshall managed just 18 catches for 154 yards and failed to find the end zone.
Although Marshall’s Giants career was a dud, he still needs to be replaced. Oklahoma State’s Marcell Ateman was available in the fifth round and Iowa State’s Allen Lazard went undrafted, but Big Blue decided to pass on the position altogether in the draft. New York signed Davon Grayson and Jawill Davis as undrafted free agents, but neither is the big-bodied receiver that Marshall was supposed to be.
Could Marshall be replaced by the man he said there was no room for? As soon as the Giants released Marshall, rumors started flying that he would be replaced by Dez Bryant, who has expressed an interest in playing for the Giants.
Bryant has had attitude issues throughout his career, although he’s controlled himself off the field lately. However, Dez is known to have a sideline outburst or two during the season, and Odell Beckham Jr. likely does that enough on his own. There’s also the matter of paying Bryant with New York’s limited cap space. The upside to signing Bryant is that he is motivated to prove the Dallas Cowboys wrong for cutting him. A motivated talent like Dez could be a dangerous weapon in Big Blue’s offense.
Whether or not the Giants sign Bryant, they could use another outside receiver opposite Beckham, with Sterling Shepard operating in the slot. If not Dez, other free agent wide receiver options include Jeremy Maclin, Eric Decker, and Michael Floyd.
