Trenton Cannon

Adding to the running back room was a good idea. Matt Forte has put the cleats away for good. Bilal Powell is going to be 30, believe it or not. Didn’t that come up out of nowhere? It seemed like Powell just entered the league. Bringing in another body was a smart move. Nyheim Hines was on my radar but he went to the Colts. The Jets decided to opt for a back in the final round.

Cannon clearly has talent. During his final year in school he averaged 148.9 yards per game on the ground. He scored 41 times in three seasons and never averaged less than 110 yards per game in any season. I don’t care if we are talking about pee wee football, those numbers are huge. Anyone that can put up those type of numbers is a talented football player.

To be able to take an NFL pounding, Cannon would be well served by bulking up a bit. At 5-11, 185 pounds it’s not impossible to succeed but more bulk would help him survive the hits of NFL players. However, in a league where running back by committee is prevalent, Cannon could help.

He was passed until the seventh round for a reason, though.

Grade: C+
