Round Six: Michael  Joseph, CB, Dubuque

With Trumaine Johnson added to a secondary that already includes Morris Claiborne, Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, the Jets will have a starting group ready to take on just about anyone. But what about the depth chart? Buster Skrine will be fine in the slot, but does anyone feel any fear of the likes of Juston Burris and company? Opposing quarterbacks certainly aren’t afraid of him.

To play the defense that Todd Bowles likes to play, he needs tall corners that can cover man to man. Bowles blitzes a lot so that leads to plenty of one on one coverage. Michael Joseph may have come from a smaller school but at 6-1, he is a decent height for an NFL cornerback. According to Lance Zierlein, he has the ball skills and the hands of a receiver. With 15 interceptions over the last three years, the numbers bare that out.

There are clearly skills here. Joseph accelerates to keep up with his receiver quickly. His hips make smooth transitions and he is a very able-bodied tackler. He needs to improve his hand technique to play press at the next level. But talent is talent, despite the fact that the competition wasn’t s high for him as other potential draftees.

To take this defense to the next level, take a shot at this guy. It might just be worth it.
