OG. 2. 31. Pick Analysis. UTEP. Will Hernandez. player. Scouting Report

Many people didn’t know what Dave Gettleman meant when he said he’s looking for “hog mollies“. Well, he meant Will Hernandez. The UTEP product is the definition of a hog mollie. He’s an old-school guard who uses his brute strength to dominate defensive linemen. Hernandez gets his hands on defenders, rolls his hips, and moves the line of scrimmage backward. He’s also a flexible athlete who can anchor in pass protection.

The New York Giants took the first step to improving their offensive line when they made Nate Solder the NFL’s highest-paid offensive lineman, however, that is just the first step. They also added Patrick Omameh but need to keep adding talented prospects in the trenches. Hernandez would start at left guard from day one and allow Omameh and John Jerry to battle it out at right guard.

Some Giants fans want to draft Quenton Nelson in the first round, but that’s unlikely because the positional value is just not there for a guard in the top five. When it comes to the No. 34 pick, however, Hernandez is the perfect choice. The drop-off from Nelson to Hernandez is not as great as their draft positions will suggest.

The only issue for the Giants in drafting Hernandez is whether or not he’ll still be on the board at the end of the first round. If necessary, Gettleman should trade back into the first round to draft Hernandez. That’s how badly Big Blue needs this hog mollie.
