A profile of a potential New York Jets draft pick, quarterback Baker  Mayfield.

Thursday night, the New York Jets have the third overall pick in the NFL draft. Everybody knows that they will be taking a quarterback. If they don’t, the general manager should leave his keys on his desk. They will be taking a quarterback with the pick. So far we have written profiles for Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold.

We profile one more today. This quarterback has taken the world by storm both for his play on the field and his personality as well. He may be short in stature but he finds the way to get the job done. He also may very well be the Jets selection and that will excite much of the fan base. Of course, we are talking about Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield.

More from Empire Writes Back

The first thing to note is Mayfield’s accuracy. To post back to back seasons of a completion percentage of over 70% is a major accomplishment no matter what level it is. His three-year percentage at Oklahoma was 69.8%.

This just in, that’s very good.

Mayfield, while at Texas Tech, became the first quarterback to walk on as a freshman and start for a BCS school. This is evidence of a player that has a motor that quits for NOBODY. Baker fights for every inch and that makes him the type of player that Jets fans will rally around. His teammates will respond as well.

MEASURABLES

HEIGHT: 6-2

WEIGHT: 215 POUNDS

ARMS: 30.25 INCHES

HANDS: 9.25 INCHES

At the Combine, Mayfield ran the forty yard dash in 4.84 seconds. He ran the 20 yard shuttle in 4.28 seconds and the three cone drill in seven seconds flat. There is no doubt that Mayfield can move around.

Let’s look at some videotape:

We have talked about the cockiness previously. Here we talk simply about his play on the field. There is a lot to like. He is particularly good with play action. Mayfield ball fakes guys open with a well-sold play action fake. He can make all of the throws, on a rope when needed as well as with touch. Improvisational skills will serve Mayfield well in the NFL also.

Next: It comes down to 2018 for Maccagnan

The footwork, however, is all over the place. He’s off his back foot, he is making jump throws and even not moving his foot at all. There are throws that Mayfield gets no torque on at all. This will lead to being inaccurate and he won’t get away with that in the NFL. His anticipation on the throws could be better as well.

Mayfield is a player that has shown the ability to lead men, and he would be a good pick for the Jets. He will take some teaching but he has all the makings of a good pro.
