Round One: Baker  Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma

More from Empire Writes Back

He won’t get the moniker “Broadway Baker” until he wins a Super Bowl, but he is the pick here with the third overall pick. It just seems more and more like Baker Mayfield is the guy that has impressed the team the most.

Mayfield has definitely done his share of winning during his college career. He has worked his tail off to get where he has gotten, coming to Texas Tech and starting as a walk-on freshman. Due to scholarship issues he was forced to sit out 2014 with the Sooners but took the team by storm in 2015. Mayfield completed nearly 70% of his passes at Oklahoma and played in a bowl game every year.

Baker was Offensive Player of the Year on two separate occasions (2015 and 2017) and won the Heisman Trophy last season. Teammates rallied behind this young man. That is what you want to see out of a potential franchise quarterback.

This would be an abnormal selection for Mike Maccagnan. He typically favors the taller, big-armed quarterbacks like Josh Allen and (deep breath) Christian Hackenberg. A selection like Mayfield would be a clear indication that coaches like Jeremy Bates have his ear. Whatever the reason, as long as Mayfield behaves himself this would be an excellent choice for the Jets to begin their future.
