Wednesday night’s win by the New York Mets is a sign of a team that is starting to come together.

No, the New York Mets did not win their most recent series against the Washington Nationals. The series even included an epic meltdown by the bullpen. They only took the final game of the series on Wednesday night, losing two out of three games in the series. However, all was not loss against the NL East rivals.

It looked like another Steven Matz outing early on. He gave up three runs early. He did go on a run of retiring 10 straight batters but was pinch hit for in the bottom of the fourth. Matz wasn’t happy and he slammed his helmet and bat down after being lifted from the game. The Mets were into the bullpen early once again, and late in the game the score was 4-2 in favor of the Nats. It seemed as if they were headed to a sweep.

But it was not an ordinary night for the Mets. In the bottom of the eighth, the Mets caused a Nats meltdown, putting up nine runs on the way to an 11-4 victory. Yoenis Cespedes capped the rally off with a grand slam, and the route was on. New York saves some face and picks up a victory in the final game of the series.

There aren’t a lot of big games during the month of April, but this might just be one of them. A meltdown like they had in the first game of the series can send a team into a tailspin. Let’s be honest, didn’t that eighth inning the other night feel like the “same old Mets”? It felt like the old days, with Jacob deGrom pitching deep into the game and the bullpen not being able to hold it down.

After losing the second game of the series, the Mets decided to come together. Mets teams of the past would have folded and would have been swept. It would have been back to Nationals dominance of the NL East and the Mets would have begun their fade into anonymity. Not this Mets team.

Granted it is still very early. Anything can happen, we all know that. But this Mets team is showing signs of being different than those of the past. They have chemistry and their eighth inning comeback over the Nationals is clear evidence. The signs for the near future are quite strong.
