Round Four: Jeff Holland, OLB, Auburn

Here the Jets look at a guy that can help solve the edge rusher mystery. It’s tough to get a pass rusher that makes a major impact on day three of the draft, but Jeff Holland is a player that has a chance. Last week, I wrote a profile on Holland as a potential member of the Jets and today I stick with him as a good day three choice.

Holland stepped up big time in his final season at Auburn, upping his sack totals from two sacks to 9.5 sacks. He also put up 12.5 TFL’s last season. He isn’t your traditional physical specimen, measuring at 6-2, 249 pounds. He is quick, dropping a forty yard dash time of 4.79 seconds at the NFL Combine. Holland simply finds a way to get home to the quarterback despite physical limitations. This is evidence of a player with a strong motor, and these are the players you want on a franchise.

The motor is clear. On one particular play Holland is down on the ground but still looking to make a play on the quarterback. He actually has the ability to make a lineman miss him due to deceptive feet. He also beats his guy to the outside. If he gets the step on a tackle he is going to find his way past him.

Holland needs a bigger assortment of moves. If he gets engaged by the blocker he sometimes has it rough trying to get disengaged. A good spin move will help him a lot. That, however, can be taught. This is an excellent day three investment where you aren’t spending much to get at least a situational pass rusher.
