Round Five: 157. Troy Fumagalli, TE, Wisconsin

The Jets need help at the tight end position. Yes, Quincy Enunwa is coming back and will be used as the “H-Back” quite often, but they still need a guy that can go up the seams and open the middle up. Austin Seferian-Jenkins returned to Florida with the Jaguars, and the Jets did add two tight ends in Bucky Hodges and Clive Walford. But, none of these guys have proven to be breakout tight ends. Competition is good too.

Troy Fumagalli was sitting on the board in this fifth round scenario. He’s not huge, standing at 6-1 and weighing in at 247 pounds, but he was productive. Fumagalli caught 135 passes in four years at Wisconsin with over 1,600 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. The interesting part of this player is the fact that despite his small frame, he found a way to remain productive over four years. According to Lance Zierlein, Fumagalli works hard to be an effective blocker and catches the ball with his hands.

These are good traits, folks.

From the tape you can see that he is a fierce blocker but can be inefficient. The theme of this post has been guys that need a better bend at the knees, and Fumagalli is no different. He meets his opponent very upright and that will be tough for him when he fights against defenders at the NFL level. A better knee bend will give him better leverage.

His use of his hands to go attempt a reception is the best sign of a good receiver. He doesn’t have all of the athletic traits but Fumagalli figures out a way to get the job done. That is the type of player the Jets need.
