New York Mets: Winners and Losers from Opening Week
By David Burton
Winner: Amed Rosario
To start his first full season, Amed Rosario has shown people why he was such a highly regarded prospect. In his first week, Rosario hit .333 with five RBI, with all five coming with two outs. Upon his September call-up in 2017, Rosario had 165 at-bats with only 10 RBI.
Batting in the No. 9 spot in the order, Rosario delivered multiple clutch hits during the week to help the team to victory. Mickey Callaway has opted to bat Rosario last, with the pitcher’s spot eighth, likely in order to give him more pitches to see. Without the pitcher hitting behind him, opposing pitchers are likely to try to attack Rosario to avoid facing the top of the order behind him. So far the decision has proven to be a good one, as Rosario had a terrific first week at the plate.
Rosario also showed other signs of improvement. He showed speed on the base-paths, hustling out a game-winning triple on Wednesday. Rosario has also played great defense at the shortstop position, something that he was highly rated at as a prospect. While Rosario still needs to work on parts of his game, such as patience at the plate, his first opening week in the majors was one to get excited about for Mets fans.
