The New York Jets and New York Giants are swapping ownership groups.

New York Jets fans are definitely not used to moves like this. Then again, New York Giants fans aren’t used to them either. This the kind of move we haven’t seen since the early days of the NFL. There has been a trade in ownership in the NFL and it involves the two New York teams. Are you ready for this?

Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News and Jordan Raanan of ESPN are reporting that the owners of the Giants and the Jets are swapping teams. You heard that right. The Mara family and the Tisch family are going to take over the Jets and the Johnson’s are going to take over the Giants. Now that will change things in the NFL landscape won’t it?

Back in 1972, the Colts and the Rams traded owners. We haven’t seen a move like this since. It will be a little bit easier this time. At least these two teams are in the same city. In this case they play in the same building. Exciting times here in New York.

Mr. Tisch was not available for comment but here is what Mr. Mara had to say about the deal:

"Yes I know this is a strange idea, but so what? The Jets needed a new direction, and we have a storied franchise. Even the Jets owners can’t screw it up, so let’s head on to Florham Park!"

It’s a bit of a surprise to see the Maras this ready to give up their franchise. Wellington Mara must be turning over in his grave. But these times are changing.

Giants fans were not thrilled with the news. When it broke, there was word of a potential march on the Giants offices holding posters of Ray Handley, Bill Arnsparger and Dan Reeves at the end of pitchforks to symbolize how this is the worst news since these three men coached the team.

Woody Johnson was not able to be reached for comment in the UK, but current CEO Christopher Johnson was. He was very enthusiastic:

"I never saw this coming, but how does it go in New York? They made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Now I get to own a team that actually wins once in a while. It’s a win-win situation for the Johnson family. I’m sure Woody will be happy with it."

Excuse us, right Jets fans? Johnson wants to leave that badly, let him go! It’s not as if Jets fans will miss him. Word on Twitter is that there will be fans lining the parking lot of the Florham Park facility throwing ticker tape at the Maras as they enter, akin to when a New York team wins a title.

Big news happening in the New York area. It might be exciting. It might work out badly for both teams. One thing we know is that this move is rare. Specifically it happened once before, but not since the 70’s. It’s aggressive and it’s shocking.
