We profile potential New York Jets draft pick, Jamarco Jones from Ohio State.

With free agency basically in the rearview mirror, time to move ahead to the draft. The New York Jets, as well as the rest of the NFL, are headed to pro days, bringing in players, and looking at film to decide who the future stars of the franchise are going to be. We are approximately five weeks away from Roger Goodell opening the draft and it’s an exciting time to look ahead at the various prospects.

Everyone knows why the Jets moved up to the number three pick overall. The Jets will be taking a quarterback with that selection and it will be one of the three we’ve talked about. You have heard my opinion, but we are going to leave the detailed profiles until the draft gets a bit closer. For now, we look at prospects that may be viable as selections in the second round and later.

More from Empire Writes Back

The Jets need to build up the offensive line. What once was a strength of the franchise has become a liability. It has specifically gone down hill since D’Brickashaw Ferguson retired and Nick Mangold was released. They hope to have found their new center in Spencer Long, but what about the left tackle?

Presumably the team is going to be moving forward with a young quarterback. Giving him an offensive line to grow with is of the utmost importance, and left tackle is arguably the most important position on that line. Kelvin Beachum was serviceable but nothing to right home about. It’s time to find the next D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

Why can’t it be Jamarco Jones from Ohio State? He did find himself selected to the All Big-Ten second team as a junior and first team during his senior year.

MEASURABLES

HEIGHT: 6-5

WEIGHT: 310 POUNDS

At the NFL Combine, Jones posted a 24 inch vertical jump and a 102 inch broad jump, showing good lower body strength.

Here ae some thoughts from Lance Zierlein in his draft profile:

"Strengths Pass sets feature adequate balance, a flat back and chin tucked. Looked much more confident in pass protection this year. Hands are efficient and quick and punches are well-timed. Patient pass slider who waits until target is in range to let hands go.Weaknesses Doesn’t have optimal height/length for tackle. Needs to close distance and speed up hands against long edge-setters. Hip bend is average and pad level is high. Struggles to find optimal leverage at point of attack. May improve balance as drive blocker with wider base."

The best thing to do is take a look at the video tape, so let’s go.

There is a lot to like here. His slide step appears to be highly developed for a youngster. That will serve him well in pass protection at the next level. It also helps him compensate for not being the quickest guy on the board (5.50 forty yard dash). He also drives his man out of the play on running plays. He is a good finisher when he gets his feet going.

Jones is also good when he times his punch attack on his opponent. He is able to neutralize his opponent quite effectively when he does.

Next: Jets propose a game changing rule

His biggest issue is pad angle. Defenders shed him easily at times and that is because his angle is too high. Simply put he gets too upright. He needs to set his base a bit lower to make him a stronger anchor and harder to move.

He may not be a left tackle starter on day one but he could become a depth piece early and eventually become the starter. The Jets should take a flier in round three or come back into the end of round two if necessary.
