The New York Jets will feel an impact from the Jason Pierre-Paul trade.
The New York Jets made the first blockbuster trade, acquiring the number three overall pick in return for a group of others. However it turned out not to be the only big trade that came out of the tri-state area. For anyone that still hasn’t seen it, the Giants traded pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, aka JPP to the Buccaneers. The full details of the trade can be found here. Let’s take a look at the fallout from the deal.
Obviously there is an effect on both the Giants and the Buccaneers. They made the trade, there is presumably going to be an effect on each of the two franchises. So why is this a Jets article? It’s a Jets article because this trade has a potential effect on them as well. Specifically, the effect involves the upcoming NFL draft and the fact that the Giants pick immediately before the Jets do.

As indicated by Will Gaitings, the Giants now hold a great deal of power here. With this trade they have created ambiguity about whom they are going to select. That was already there between Saquon Barkley and a quarterback but now there is even more. Will they take a running back, quarterback or edge rusher?
The Jets, on the other hand, are committed to what they are going to do. Everyone in the universe knows that they moved up to number three to take a quarterback. It really wasn’t hard to figure out. The Jets need one and they happened to move up after going to the Pro Days of Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen.
This fact makes them prime material to get bluffed into another trade. The Jets are banking on the fact that there will be three quarterbacks to choose from when they get on the board; Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen. The assumption has been that the Giants are not going to take a quarterback.
Now, this trade in fact could make this more likely and work out quite well for the Jets. The Giants now have a need at edge rusher and Bradley Chubb will be there for the taking. In short, they now have two areas of need other than quarterback that they may very well address with the number two overall draft choice. There is a good chance that the effect of this trade is a good one for the Gang Green.

However, the Jets can’t know that for sure. It would be natural for the Jets to have in the back of their minds, the idea that the Giants could take their guy. That ambiguity leaves the Jets in a position to be bluffed. If the Dave Gettleman can convince the Jets he is considering taking the heir to Eli’s throne, he could talk Mike Maccagnan into a trade to the number two spot.
Fans won’t be happy if that happens as it will likely be a costly maneuver. Let’s hope the Jets have good intelligence on this.
