2018 NFL Mock Draft: Sean Dyer’s First-Round Mock 1.0
By Sean Dyer
The Denver Broncos signed Case Keenum in free agency but only to a two-year deal. He’s a bridge quarterback and one who really only has one successful NFL season under his belt. The Broncos still need a quarterback of the future and without any trades, one should slide to them at pick No. 5.
Denver general manager John Elway was in attendance for Baker Mayfield’s Pro Day along with other members of the Broncos. There’s a clear interest here, as there should be.
Mayfield may rub some people the wrong way but he’s a competitor and the dude can sling it. Mayfield can make all the throws and is athletic enough to extend plays outside of the pocket. He’s made some questionable decisions in the heat of the moment but there’s no one you’d rather have leading you into battle.
The Broncos secondary certainly took a hit when they traded Aqib Talib but Bradley Roby should be ready to take over opposite Chris Harris Jr. They could also look to address their offensive line early in the draft if a top quarterback isn’t available when they pick.
However, if Mayfield is on the board, it will be tough for Elway to pass on him. Elway hit a home run when he signed Peyton Manning, but he can’t bank on Keenum being anywhere close to a similar player. The Broncos need a franchise quarterback and Mayfield could be their guy.
