2018 NFL Mock Draft: Sean Dyer’s First-Round Mock 1.0
By Sean Dyer
Picks 23-26
Wade Phillips’s eyes will be lighting up if Harold Landry is available at pick No. 23. Phillips was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos when Von Miller and company carried the team to a Super Bowl. Well, Phillips is now with LA and Landry has received comparisons to Miller.
Phillips could get the most out of Landry (as he does with many players) and the Rams could really use help on the edge. Robert Quinn was traded to Miami and Connor Barwin remains a free agent. Adding a pure pass rusher like Landry would take the Rams defense to the next level, especially if Ndamukong Suh decides to line up next to Aaron Donald.
The Carolina Panthers need help at receiver but they also seem content with giving Cam Newton mediocre weapons to work with. They did lose Andrew Norwell in free agency, leaving a big gap, both literally and figuratively, at guard.
Norwell was an All-Pro and will be tough to replace but Will Hernandez might be up to the task. Hernandez is an old school blocker with a nasty streak. He plays through the whistle and wants his defenders flat on the ground on every play.
Just like with the Carolina Panthers, the Tennessee Titans are replacing a key lost free agent here in the first round of the draft. Avery Williamson signed with the New York Jets leaving the Titans in need of linebacker help, especially one who can defend the run.
Rashaan Evans makes plays all over the field with sideline to sideline speed. He’s a solid tackler and a great blitzer. Mike Vrabel will enjoy having Evans in the middle of his defense.
Maurice Hurst is now firmly a first-round prospect after getting cleared to play after a concerning heart condition came up at the NFL Combine. Hurst is one of the top defensive tackle prospects in this year’s class and arguably the best pass rusher of the group.
The Atlanta Falcons lost Dontari Poe in free agency, causing a need for a defensive tackle, and also lost Adrian Clayborn, causing a need for pass rushers. Hurst fills two needs with one pick and as long as his heart condition holds up, he could be an immediate contributor on passing downs.
