Richard Rodgers

More from Empire Writes Back

If nothing else, he would have a famous name here in New York along the “Great White Way”. That’s a Broadway reference for anyone not aware, as the former Green Bay Packer shares his name with the Rodgers of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Back to football.

The Jets need a tight end after Austin Seferian-Jenkins defected down South to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jordan Leggett is still on the team and will get his shot but having a veteran as well would not hurt no matter who is playing quarterback. If it’s Baker Mayfield or Josh Rosen down the line, there is no better friend to a young quarterback than a solid tight end.

That is where Richard Rodgers comes in. First of all, he stands at 6-4 which is a wonderful size for a  red zone target. It’s a tall man’s game down where the points are scored and Rodgers can be in on any pass thrown up for him to get. We only have to go back to 2015 to see Rodgers targeted 85 times, posting 510 yards and eight touchdowns. There is no reason that, in an offense that uses the tight end like the Jets, that he couldn’t get back to those numbers.

ASJ will be missed but Rodgers would be a good move to make up for it.
