Outside Help?

Free Agency: Frostee Rucker, Denico Autry, Clinton McDonald

Just like with defensive end, the amount of money already invested in the defensive line will likely force the Giants to fill any defensive tackle holes through the draft. However, there could be a few cheaper free agent options to help them fill in their 3-4 personnel.

Frostee Rucker is familiar with James Bettcher’s system having played under him when he was Arizona’s defensive coordinator from 2015-2017. Rucker was a starter in 2015 and 2017 but a reserve in 2016. He could provide depth at the five-technique, playing behind Dalvin Tomlinson, and could help the rest of the defensive line adjust to Bettcher’s scheme.

Denico Autry is a five-technique who would offer more pass rushing ability than Rucker. Autry recorded 5.0 sacks for the Raiders in 2017 despite playing in a reserve role (three starts). Autry can also disrupt opposing offenses by getting his hands in passing lanes after having seven pass defenses last season.

Clinton McDonald can play five-technique or three-technique defensive tackle. He can also provide pass rushing ability in limited snaps. McDonald had 5.0 sacks with just three starts in 2017 and also recorded 5.5 sacks in 2013 despite having just one start during the season. He would be an interesting addition to play a reserve role and come in on obvious passing downs.
