New York Yankees: Top 5 worst moments in team history
1. The World Series we will never see again
When the 5’11, 183 pound Bill Mazeroski stepped to the plate in the ninth inning of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, he probably never thought he was about to win the World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Many little boys play in their backyard pretending to get the game-winning score in whatever sport they’re playing, but Mazeroski did it.
It was an odd series and one that had a lot of quirks. First of all, the Game 7 win was the only time the Pirates scored more than six runs. In their three wins, the Yankees won by the scores of 16-3, 10-0, and 12-0. The Yankees set a World Series record for most runs scored in any series with their 55 total runs in the seven games.

The biggest oddity of the series was how lopsided the teams were offensively. The Yankees had more hits and home runs, a higher batting average, and scored more runs, but lost the series. To date, it’s the only seven-game World Series in which the losing team outperformed the winning team in all major offensive categories. We will likely never see that again, and that’s why it’s No. 1 on the list.
