Is Davis  Webb the heir apparent to the New York Giants Eli Manning or just a smoke screen?

With the 2018 NFL Draft quickly approaching, the rumors and questions continue to swirl. For the New York Giants, the biggest question seems to be whether they will take a QB with their No. 2 overall pick. As the days go by, it is becoming more and more clear that a QB isn’t getting a call from the Giants in the first round, and that’s due to increasingly popular belief from within the organization that Davis Webb (last year’s third-round pick) will be a special talent.

Just a couple of days ago the two men tasked with rebuilding this injury-plagued and aging Giants team (general manager Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur) spoke on the No. 2 pick and finally updated their formerly robotic-like opinions of Davis Webb. Shurmur and Gettleman both reminded everyone of the fact that they had already scouted Webb and were very pleased with him as a player a year ago when they were looking at him as a potential draft pick for their former teams.

Pat also was able to get a look at Webb’s practice tapes from this past season and was very pleased with what he saw stating that it was “terrific;”. The new Giants head coach went on to say “We liked his size, we liked his arm strength,” and later followed that with “We liked his decision-making and that he can move around in the pocket. I can see why the Giants drafted him.” It is clear that the Giants’ brass finally got to look at Webb and they definitely like what they have seen from him in practice, college, and his few preseason NFL snaps.

Not everything is lilacs and daisies on Webb though, as Shurmur brought up the same point that every skeptical Giants fan has stated, and it is that although there is a lot to like about Webb and his practice/game tapes, he still has had very limited snaps in the NFL and has yet to step on the playing field for a regular season snap.

While that is true, Shurmur and a lot of Giants fans fail to realize one key aspect of that argument: Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen (the two quarterbacks believed to be the only ones that could potentially go to the Giants at No. 2) have also never stepped on the field for an NFL regular season snap making them no more worthy than Webb if solely based on that argument.

To counter it, Webb actually has more NFL experience than them and has a head start as he has been in the Giants system, is familiar with the facilities and most importantly is loved by and has built chemistry with the rest of the guys in the locker room.

In the end, there is no perfect quarterback for the Giants; even an aging Eli Manning is becoming increasingly unsettling with Giants fans. Don’t let it be a surprise though when the Giants use the No. 2 pick on a generational talent like Saquon Barkley or the ‘nastiest’ hog molly in the draft Quenton Nelson. Shurmur and Gettleman aren’t just blowing smoke. Davis Webb is there to compete, and his work ethic is second to none. The last two times the Giants had a top three pick in the NFL Draft they drafted two iconic franchise changing players: Hall of Fame Giants legends Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks. The Giants organization has a good track record with these prized picks, which feels like the hearts of Giants fans alike, are in good hands.
