I originally was going to make a crack about Rex Ryan here but I decided against it.
As the prospect is throwing, the first thing you want to look at is the footwork. Does he set his feet? Does he stride with the front and push off with the back one for velocity? Does he square up to his target? These are all important factors.
Why? It all comes back to accuracy, that’s why. Look at our two incumbent quarterbacks, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg. Both of them are examples of quarterbacks with inconsistent footwork. What happens because of it? They are inaccurate. It’s one of the reasons that they simply aren’t able to see the field.
We have also seen with our incumbent quarterbacks that it can be difficult to teach. You either have a knack for it or you don’t. Mike Maccagnan, in one will most certainly be the signature draft of his tenure, doesn’t want to make a mistake along those lines again. He will be looking for a guy with excellent footwork, so pay attention here.
