Jamal Adams is recruiting Tyrann Mathieu to join the New York Jets next season.

With the release of Muhammad Wilkerson earlier this week and the retirement of Matt Forte, the New York Jets sit with nearly $95 million of cap space (via Spotrac). Essentially Mike Maccagnan is going to be able to “make it rain”, for lack of a better term, on any free agents that he wants. Much of the focus will be on some guy named Kirk Cousins, maybe you have heard of him. But even bringing him in will likely leave the Jets with additional funds to play with.

How do the Jets spend those additional funds? Well, we have talked about the offensive line, and the pass rush, and even the running back position. There is a report that the team might be interested in Orleans Darkwa from the Giants. What if there was a dark horse position they could add to? Could that position be, believe it or not, safety?

That’s where Jamal Adams is the Jets should go. He would like to see a certain member of the Cardinals come out East:

For anyone who doesn’t know, the “Honey Badger” may be on his way out in Arizona. Nothing is official yet but there are decisions to be made on that front. Per Kent Somers of AZ Central, Mathieu earns at least $18.75 million this upcoming season from the Cardinals if he is on the roster March 14. This is between signing bonus and principle salary.

Mathieu has been good in his career but never as good as he was in 2015. Since his injury he simply hasn’t been the same player, and the Cardinals not being all-in on him is understandable (per Somers). It’s a business and $18.75 million is a lot to pay a safety. The question is whether or not he loves the team enough to come back at a reduced salary.

He certainly is a talented player and would make the Jets secondary even more dynamic. First, we have to see if he becomes a free agent. If he does, is Maccagnan willing to make a play for a guy really not at a position of need? If Adams can play cornerback they could place Mathieu in a starting safety role and that would make sense. Other than that, it just seems to make more sense to spend resources elsewhere.

Sorry Jamal.
