New York Giants: 5 scenarios to fix the offensive line in one offseason
By Sean Dyer
Scenario 3: Spend big at guard in FA, wait until second round of draft
This is certainly less than ideal, but with limited cap space and plenty of needs to fill in free agency and the draft, the New York Giants could give Ereck Flowers another shot at left tackle.
If you wanted to say that keeping Flowers at left tackle is not fixing the offensive line, it would be hard to argue with you. However, if he gets some help with an improved left guard next to him, he could play better. And maybe, just maybe, new offensive line coach Hal Hunter can figure Flowers out.
That improved left guard is none other than Andrew Norwell. We talked about how the Giants are after the All-Pro and Dave Gettleman was the man who signed Norwell after he went undrafted. Hopefully, Norwell’s talent could mask some of Flowers’s flaws on the outside.
Big surprise, the Giants re-sign Brett Jones to play center.
New York could decide that John Jerry is a capable right guard and stick with him. Out of the offensive linemen currently under contract, Jerry is the most reliable.
If Pat Shurmur finds a quarterback in this year’s class that he loves, Big Blue could take their future franchise quarterback with the second overall pick. In doing so, they would have to wait until the second round to address the offensive line.
With pick No. 34, the Giants would be looking at the second-tier of tackle prospects such as Tyrell Crosby, Martinas Rankin, and Jamarco Jones. All three could be day one starters at right tackle with the potential to move to left tackle if the Ereck Flowers experiment falls flatter on its face.
