Round One: Harold Landry

More from Empire Writes Back

Going with an edge pass rusher is a terrific idea here. I have said it time and time again, and all Jets fans know what is coming. Getting a pass rush off of the edge has been the second biggest problem for the team after quarterback. How often has the Jets defense played a good game but been unable to close it out? An edge presence will go along way to help.

As always a word from the original mock:

"Landry has the speed, quick twitch, and flexibility NFL scouts covet in pass rushers. He beats blockers with his explosive first step and dips under offensive linemen before they can get their hands on him. Landry lacks an array of pass rush moves but those will come with time and coaching. He may be a situational pass rusher as a rookie but he’ll be a damn good one. As Landry develops more of a pass rush arsenal, he’ll become a defensive building block for the Jets along with Leonard Williams, Jamal Adams, and Marcus Maye."

In his junior year, Landry was dominant, posting 16.5 sacks. Instead of riding that wave into the draft, he returned to Boston College for his senior year. Unfortunately he suffered an ankle injury and was only able to record five sacks in that final season. Now he heads to the draft looking to help a team off of the edge.

Have a look at some tape, you be the judge:

He certainly makes up for his small stature (6-3) with speed. Landry does have to develop more moves before he can be an every down guy on the outside in the NFL.

As far as value, his workouts will be key. Right now, most of the expert mock drafts place Landry between 25-28. That would make choosing him at 15th an overreach. If that stays the same, maybe the Jets should trade back further, or consider an offensive lineman here and go pass rush early in the second.

It would be hard to argue with adding someone that has this much talent, though.
