2018 NFL Mock Draft: New York Jets 3-round mock 5.0
By Sean Dyer
Muhammad Wilkerson’s New York Jets career seems to be over. He’s expected to be a cap casualty before March 16 when his $16.75 million 2018 base salary becomes fully guaranteed.
Although Wilkerson has disappointed the last couple of years, he leaves a rather large hole to fill on the defensive line.
Rasheem Green is raw, but he has greater potential than any other defensive lineman in this year’s class, outside of the first-round guys.
At 6’5, 280 lb., Green has elite size and his combination of power and quickness is hard to find. He’s just working on putting everything together.
Green has a quick first step and the strength to overpower blockers. He also has a rip, swim, and bull rush moves when rushing the passer. The problem is, Green is still working on how and when to use his pass rush moves and he also has to work on his pad level. When Green gets too high coming out of his stance, he exposes his large frame to blockers and they’re able to get their hands on him.
With the First Pick’s Jon Dove believes Green has the potential to dominate at the next level but needs a little polishing:
"At this stage in his development, Rasheem Green is more of projectable prospect rather than a finished product. He has elite size, raw power and the quickness needed to be a disruptive force. … The problem is that Green needs to play with more consistency and refine his technique."
If Green lives up to his potential, the Jets will come away looking like geniuses for grabbing him in the middle of the second round. After cutting Wilkerson, New York will also have plenty of cap space to sign a veteran stopgap like Chris Baker, Frostee Rucker, or Tom Johnson while the coaching staff works with Green to unlock his full capabilities.
