2017 Review

Expectations were pretty high for Evan Engram after the New York Giants used their 2017 first round pick on him. For the most part, he lived up to them.

After the wide receiver position was decimated by injuries, Engram was one of Eli Manning’s only reliable targets for the second half of the season.

Engram scored a touchdown in four straight games from Week 6 to Week 10 (the Giants had a bye Week 8). He also hauled in at least four catches in 11 of the 15 games he played.

The biggest issues for Engram were drops and blocking. According to Pro Football Focus, Engram led all tight ends in drops with 11 and was the third worst tight end in run blocking.

Overall, Engram had a successful rookie season but there are certain areas he can improve going forward.

Rhett Ellison was signed to be the blocking tight end/fullback/H-back for Big Blue and he did just that. Ellison got more snaps as the season went on and the Giants running game improved accordingly.

Ellison was also a solid target for Manning down the stretch when New York was starved of reliable pass catchers. He set career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

After a somewhat promising rookie year, Jerell Adams was mostly a non-factor in 2017. He did not have more than one catch in a game until Week 16 when he hauled in four catches for 31 yards.
