Round Two: Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn

With the second of two selections in round two, the Jets improve the cornerback slot. Here is Dyer:

"At 6’1 203 lb., Davis fits the bill of a Todd Bowles cornerback. He excels in press-man coverage and uses his size to get himself between the ball and his receiver. He uses good technique in coverage, allowing him to change direction and stay with receivers. Davis also has good ball skills, finding it in the air and knocking it away."

In short, Sean went 3-3 here as I like this pick a lot as well. A Todd Bowles defense needs good corners. Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye need the ability to do their thing and make plays. Lockdown corners would be a big step in the right direction.

Davis fits the bill in terms of size, standing at 6-1 and weighing in at 203 pounds. Let’s look at one of his games:

This young man has great potential. He is always looking for the football, even in the run game, but his coverage skills were much more important to me. Davis’ hips are smooth as silk. He changes direction with a receiver with the greatest of ease. He gets inside of his opponent on slant routes too, almost as if he is the receiver.

Davis can get a little handsy, however. In one sense, it’s good when he does it near the line of scrimmage. We don’t see many corners playing press man in college. It gives him the chance to be quite the rare bird. On other hand, it happens down the field a lot as well and that will lead to pass interference calls. It can be coached and it will have to be. We definitely don’t want another Kyle Wilson on our hands.

This setup would be an excellent way for the Jets first three picks to play out. Could it be tweaked? Sure. But to finally get the offense going through the draft with top flight talent and add a big corner? Maccagnan would get rave reviews from the Jets fans.
