Round Two: Will Hernandez, OG, UTEP

"Hernandez excels in the running game. He explodes off the line, grabbing hold of defenders with his strong hands and doesn’t let go. He’s able to move defenders backward, creating a new line of scrimmage a few yards downfield. Able to quickly move to the second level, Hernandez has good balance and technique which allow him to avoid missed blocks. Hernandez brings his nasty streak to pass protection as well. He has good awareness and keeps a wide base to shut down pass rushers."

Admittedly I didn’t know much about this guy until Sean included him. What comes up on film, however, is absolutely wonderful. Besides anything else, one of my biggest priorities is to fix the offensive line. The quarterback could be whomever you want but they can’t complete passes lying on the ground. The running backs can’t score touchdowns lying on the ground either.

He is a huge man, standing at 6-2 and weighing 348 pounds. It will be interesting to see his arm length and hand size at the NFL Combine, but we have the makings of a prototypical NFL lineman here. It’s not just his size, it’s the way he uses it. Hernandez gets his hands right up on his opponent and drives through him in the run game.

When it comes to pass blocking, Pro Football Focus graded Will Hernandez at the top of the draft class in terms of pass blocking efficiency. His grade of 99.8 topped all other offensive guards on the board. Whomever the Jets decide is next up to be their franchise quarterback has to be protected. This guy would be a good choice. If there is a negative, it is that he doesn’t have experience on the outside. I would love them to find a left tackle. But I would have no issues with them selecting Hernandez here.
