New York Mets: An interesting spring training on the horizon
The New York Mets have an interesting spring training ahead of them.
The New York Mets lost 92 games in 2017. Everything fell apart. The disabled list basically looked like a photocopy of the active roster and the lack of depth cost the Mets big time. The season imploded and they hardly even resembled the team that went to the World Series in 2015 and the playoffs the year after.
Terry Collins is out and Mickey Callaway is in. Dave Eiland is the new pitching coach, putting his guys on an offseason regimen for the first time. It’s clearly a new era in Queens. Optimism runs high as it does every year at around this time. It’s spring training! We are all 0-0. Anything can happen.

With that, the Mets enter a very interesting spring training. Why? Well look at the roster. One would think that coming off of a 92 loss season that a roster overhaul would be coming. After all, the team was bad in 2017, right?
But as we look at this roster, there isn’t as much competition as we would expect. Obviously we know the starting rotation. Adrian Gonzalez and Dominic Smith will be at first. Asdrubal Cabrera will be at second base. Amed Rosario and Jose Reyes will be at short and Todd Frazier will be manning the hot corner.
Go around the outfield and you will find the same story. The bullpen may have a bit of competition but that is about it. The roster is basically set. It’s interesting for a team that fell apart last year.
Next: Mickey Callaway may be a difference maker
So what will this spring be about? Chemistry and conditioning. This team needs to learn how to play well together as there are some new parts. The corners of the infield come to mind. They have to figure out how to win together. They also must get in shape, obviously. If they spend another year on the DL it will be another ugly season in Queens.
