Here is why New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan should solve the quarterback problem in free agency.
The New York Jets are looking to finally resolve the quarterback situation. It has gone on long enough and this is the time to get it done. Why this year? There are more options available than their have been in many years. A franchise quarterback is available on the market in Kirk Cousins as well as other free agents that are a tier lower. It’s also a deep draft class. All of the points are in place.
In walks Mike Maccagnan. In his first three drafts, he has had his hits. Leonard Williams comes to mind, as does Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye. He has also had several misses. We don’t need to review those as they hurt too much. He’s the “football guy”, he isn’t supposed to miss. Ironically, heading into this season the top receiver on the team was selected by John Idzik. Needless to say this is a big one for Maccagnan.

When you go around the fan base, there are mixed opinions about Maccagnan. Some believe he deserves this shot at picking the quarterback and that he can do it. Others believe he shouldn’t even be around anymore to be the one making the decision.
The fears of the fans are real, and to be honest, they are logical. Why? Take a look at this list of names:
What do these names have in common? They are all quarterbacks that have had some success in the league already and that Maccagnan has passed on. Hundley improved as the season went along as he replaced Rodgers and Mahomes has been handed the starting job.
Maccagnan has selected us Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. It would be hard to argue someone believing that Macc’s ability to scout a quarterback leaves something to be desired. He has signed better free agents than he has selected rookies.
Maybe that is just how fate is going to have our general manager fix the problem. What a feeling it would be for the Jets to finally be secure at the quarterback position. Us Jets fans would probably have to pinch ourselves.
