Mickey Callaway may be a huge difference maker for the New York Mets

This week the New York Mets made another offseason acquisition, signing Todd Frazier to a two-year/$17 million deal. Frazier joins Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, and Adrian Gonzalez as new additions from last year’s roster. While these aren’t some of the big names that some Mets fans were hoping for, they do address important needs to the team and add key depth to the lineup.

Evaluating the Roster

Taking a quick look at the Mets roster, the team is led by their outfield of Yoenis Cespedes, Jay Bruce, and Michael Conforto. Conforto, who had a breakout season last year, will start the season on the DL and will likely be replaced by a platoon of Juan Lagares and Brandon Nimmo. With a healthy Conforto, Cespedes, and Bruce, the Mets can have one of the better outfield trios in the league.

The infield is an aged but experienced group, with the exception of SS Amed Rosario. Rosario made his much-anticipated MLB debut for the Mets last August. Prior to his call-up, Rosario was ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect, per MLB.com. Rosario has tremendous potential and can be a huge difference maker for the organization’s future. The team also re-signed Jose Reyes who will add depth at SS and 3B coming off the bench.  In addition, last season Reyes played a big role in the mentoring of Rosario. With Reyes and Rosario back together, he can continue to help the young talent improve upon his game heading into this season.

After a rocky start to his MLB career, Dominic Smith will most likely find himself starting the season in AAA or in a bench role. The team signed first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to help fill the position, probably until Smith seems ready. We could see Gonzalez enter a platoon with Wilmer Flores at 1B, while Flores could also see action at other infield positions as well.
