2018 NFL Mock Draft: Evaluating New York Jets three-round mock 3.0
Round Two: Martinas Rankin
With their second pick of the round, Sean addresses the offensive line:
"This is a deep offensive tackle class with five to seven potential first rounders. However, Rankin typically ranks seventh on that list and although he could sneak into the first round, it’s more likely that he’s available in the second. Rankin could compete with Brandon Shell for the starting right tackle job as a rookie or challenge Brian Winters at right guard. If Wesley Johnson isn’t re-signed, Rankin could even be the Jets starting center in 2018."
At 6-5, 315 pounds, his size is appropriate for an NFL tackle. According to Sean’s article, via Draft wire, Rankin has quality starter potential at the tackle position and can play center. The Jets need to improve upon Wesley Johnson immediately. If they can do it quickly with Rankin, I’m all for it. Versatility is at a premium, especially with offensive linemen. The more versatile, the more valuable.
Time to apply the eye test:
This may be my favorite pick of Sean’s mock. There is a lot to like with Rankin, even in this short tape. His aggressiveness is above reproach. He drives through his opponent, especially in the run game, and takes them out. Though we don’t have an official measurement, his arms are long and he gets in a good initial punch on the man coming at him.
His slide step could be a bit better but that will come with coaching. There is plenty of talent here with Rankin and the Jets would be making a good call bringing him into the fold.
