Round Two: Mason Rudolph
Sean chose the first of two second round picks to be the evasive quarterback position:
"Rudolph has great size at 6’5, 230 lb. He’s tough, can tuck it and run, and doesn’t mind lowering his shoulder to get a first down. He also stands tall in the pocket under pressure. Rudolph has good arm talent and throws a fantastic deep ball. He’s been one of the most productive college passers and with more consistent accuracy, he would be considered a first-round pick."
Mike Maccagnan certainly loves his tall quarterbacks. Right, Christian Hackenberg?
All kidding aside, Rudolph is a prototypical quarterback when it comes to his size. He won’t have any problems seeing over the defense and his ability to make a play with his feet is important. As a 63% collegiate passer he certainly was productive. Judging from the tape included in Sean’s work, Rudolph has a big arm as well.
This player also looks like a guy that can be coached at the next level. Although he was in an offense where he went on the first or second read, his footwork is actually quite good. He looked to set his feet the proper way on nearly every throw and it showed. The Jets have dealt with draft picks at the quarterback position that don’t set their feet consistently. Again, right Christian Hackenberg? How about you Bryce Petty, what do you think?
Sean mentioned the concern about Big-12 quarterbacks. The Jets haven’t had much luck with selecting a quarterback in the second round either. That being said, if the Jets don’t sign Cousins, they could do worse than Rudolph here in the second round. If I were carrying Mike Maccagan’s coffee, however, I would address the quarterback situation in round one. Don’t wait until round two.
