New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has been able to sign a few decent free agents over the past couple of months without spending too much money. If he is able to bring right-handed pitcher Lance Lynn to Queens, then this offseason will definitely be categorized as a successful one for the Mets.

As we get closer to spring training, a decent veteran starting pitcher is still a free agent. The New York Mets would be wise to make a big push to sign Lance Lynn.

Lynn, 30, is one of the best starting pitchers left on the market. The Mets could certainly use another arm in their starting rotation, especially considering the uncertainty regarding the health of their young starters. Noah SyndergaardMatt HarveySteven Matz, and Zack Wheeler all had significant injuries last season.

In 33 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals last season, Lynn went 11-8 with a 3.43 ERA. Although he has never really been considered an ace, he has always been a solid middle-of-the-rotation guy. Lynn came up with the Cardinals in 2011 and in six seasons, he has a record of 72-47 with a career ERA of 3.38.

If the Mets were able to sign Lynn, he would probably be the third starter in the rotation, behind Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom. Harvey and Matz would then round out the rotation as the fourth and fifth starters, respectively. This would leave Wheeler as the odd man out unless new Mets manager Mickey Callaway decided to go with a six-man rotation to the begin the season.

Obviously, whether or not the Mets are able to sign Lynn hinges on his price tag. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets are interested in adding either Lynn or Alex Cobb if their prices go down. Cobb went 12-10 with a 3.66 ERA in 29 starts for the Tampa Bay Rays last season.

The Mets are not the only team interested in Lance Lynn. The Washington Nationals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Los Angles Angels have reportedly all expressed interest in him. If the Mets really want Lynn, then they are going to have to hope that his price continues to drop as we approach spring training.

Next: Mets and Yankees fans react to Todd Frazier signing

Adding a starting pitcher would be a good way to cap off the offseason for the Mets. With Monday’s signing of third baseman Todd Frazier, the offense is in good shape heading into the 2018 season. Adding one more arm would help to solidify the rotation. As the Mets have learned over the past few years, you can never have enough starting pitching.
