Super Bowl Drinking Game for New York Sports Fans
By Sean Dyer
It’s Super Bowl Sunday as the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles will battle in the 52nd rendition of the NFL’s championship game. New York sports fans, however, may need a drinking game to make it through the day.
Super Bowl 52 will feature the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, perhaps the worst matchup a New York sports fan can imagine.
I went into detail about how this Boston-Philly Super Bowl showdown is a matchup from hell for New Yorkers. The best way to make it through the day could be to create a drinking game.
Before I get into the specifics, I must stress the importance of drinking responsibly. Drink in moderation. For most of us, you have work on Monday (sorry to bring that up). Most importantly, do not, under any circumstance, drink and drive. Assign a designated driver and they can keep tabs on our list.
So, without further ado, here is our drinking game for New York sports fans to make it through Super Bowl LII:
1. Every time they show Gisele Bundchen – take a drink
Mrs. Brady is sure to get plenty of camera action. As if Tom Brady going for his sixth Super Bowl ring isn’t enough, we have to be reminded that he’s married to a supermodel. TB12 is about as successful as it gets in every aspect of his life. Every time we are reminded of that, take a drink.
2. Every time they mention the Patriots’ 28-3 deficit from last year – take a drink
This has just been played out. Yes, I get it. The Pats came back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit to win the Super Bowl last year. But enough is enough. Coming back from down 28-3 in Super Bowl LI won’t help New England win on Sunday.
3. Every time they mention Jimmy Garoppolo – take a drink
Jimmy Garoppolo was supposed to be the heir to Tom Brady’s thrown. That was until he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers. He was reportedly traded against Bill Belichick’s wishes and because Brady wants to play another five years. Jimmy G, along with other issues, reportedly caused some tension among New England’s leadership and they were thinking about breaking up.
That is absolute garbage. Another Super Bowl run has proven that nothing is wrong with the Pats. They’re not breaking up and they may win every Super Bowl for the rest of time. This power structure will continue to terrorize the NFL for years to come and that’s reason enough to take a drink.
4. Every time they show Carson Wentz highlights – take a drink
The Philadelphia Eagles made it to the Super Bowl with their backup quarterback Nick Foles leading the way. As scary as that is, it’s even scarier when you realize that Carson Wentz will be back next year and when he was healthy in 2017, he looked like a top-five quarterback in the NFL.
Wentz looked like the frontrunner for MVP before tearing his ACL. If he comes back completely healthy in 2018, he and the Eagles will be poised to win another NFC East title. Wentz highlights will just remind us of that fact and give us reason to take a drink.
5. Any mention or thought of the New York Giants two Super Bowl wins against the Pats – cheers and finish your drink
The New England Patriots have been absolutely dominant. The Brady-Belichick duo has won five of their previous seven Super Bowl appearances. The two losses, however, are both to the New York Giants. Any time the broadcast mentions those victories or you just think back to those improbable championship runs, cheers and finish your drink!
I, as a Giants fan, am rooting for the Patriots partly because the Giants could then hang on to being the only team to beat the Pats in the Super Bowl.
6. If you think about Bryce Petty, Christian Hackenberg, or Mark Sanchez – take a drink or two
New York Jets fans hate Tom Brady. He’s been dominating the AFC East for nearly two decades while the Jets have struggled to find their next franchise quarterback.
Mark Sanchez made it to a pair of AFC Championship Games but also had the butt fumble. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are both NFL backups and really nothing more.
So, if you think about any of these three mediocre quarterbacks, do yourself a favor and take a drink or two. Hopefully, Baker Mayfield will lead the Jets to the promised land in the near future.
7. If you think about Ben McAdoo or Jerry Reese – take a drink or two
Now, if you think of Jerry Reese as the architect of the New York Giants two Super Bowl victories over the Patriots, then there’s no need to drink. However, if you remember Reese as the man who completely swung and missed on countless draft classes, then drink up.

As for Ben McAdoo, any thought is a bad night. He benched Eli Manning and drove Big Blue into the ground. You’ve probably taken a few drinks already this season because of McAdoo. That can continue on Sunday.
8. If the New England Patriots win – finish your drink (for New York Jets fans)
Jets fans have already seen WAY too many Patriot Super Bowl championships. Another one is just too much to bear. If New England wins again, finish your drink, go to bed, and hope when you wake up it was all just a bad dream.
9. If the Philadelphia Eagles win – finish your drink (for New York Giants fans)
Eagles fans, and Philly fans in general, are quite obnoxious. We’ve all seen the videos of them harassing Minnesota Vikings fans after the NFC Championship Game. If the Eagles secure their first Super Bowl victory, their fans will be insufferable. If Philadelphia wins, finish your drink, block all Eagles fans on your phone, and don’t go to Philly for a year or two (hopefully the city-wide fire will be put out by then).
Next: A Super Bowl from Hell for New York Sports Fans
Super Bowl LII is certainly less than ideal for New York sports fans. Try to surround yourself with friends and family to make it more enjoyable and hopefully this drinking game helps.
AND REMEMBER, PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY!
