2018 NFL Mock Draft: New York Jets 3-round mock 2.0
By Sean Dyer
If the New York Jets are going to sign Kirk Cousins and give him mega-money, they’ll need to protect their investment by improving the offensive line.
Left tackle Kelvin Beachum had a solid 2017 campaign but he was the only Jets offensive lineman to earn even an “average” grade from Pro Football Focus. They need to add some talent in the trenches.
That’s where Chukwuma Okorafor comes in. For whatever size Maurice Hurst lacks, “Chukes” makes up for with ease.
The 6’6, 330 lb. tackle went from playing soccer as a kid in Nigeria to one of the most gifted offensive line prospects in this year’s class.
Okorafor has some versatility with experience at both tackle spots. He also combines surprising athleticism with even more surprising technique, considering he’s still relatively new to football.
“Chukes” has just about everything you can’t teach from his size to his long arms to his natural strength and speed. He may need some polishing at the next level but that’s what NFL coaching staffs are for.
According to Draft Wire, the Jets have to hope he’s still around when they pick at 37:
"Watching the tape, it’s hard to tell Okorafor was a fairly latecomer to the game, as his physical tools are only enhanced by his use of polished technique and awareness. A strong showing during offseason workout events could easily sneak him into the first round, and he could be a huge steal if he lasts into Day 2."
Okorafor could compete with Beachum or Brandon Shell for either starting tackle spot right out of the gate and one of the three could try their hand inside at guard.
Kirk Cousins could make upwards of $30 million a year. The Jets better make sure he stays healthy and adding Okorafor to their offensive line could be a huge help.
