The New York Yankees land in the top-3 of Baseball America’s farm system rankings for the second year in a row as they get the No. 2 spot for 2018.

Baseball America came out with their 2018 Organizational Talent Rankings this week and the New York Yankees were named the second-best farm system in the league.

For the second year in a row, the Atlanta Braves claim the top spot. This is even more impressive this year after the Braves lost 13 international prospects in the John Coppolella fallout.

Remaining in the top-3 is also very impressive for the Yankees and highlights the depth of their farm system. Since last year’s rankings, Aaron Judge graduated to the major leagues along with Clint Frazier, Jordan Montgomery, and Chad Green. The Yankees also lost Blake Rutherford, Ian Clarkin, Jorge Mateo, James Kaprielian, Dustin Fowler, and Jorge Guzman, among others, in various deadline and offseason trades.

To lose all of that prospect talent and move up from No. 3 to No. 2 is a great accomplishment and speaks to the job Brian Cashman has done loading up his farm system in recent years. New York ranked in the bottom half of the league from 2014-2016 in terms of Baseball America’s Organizational Talent Rankings and now they’re among the best.

Hitting on recent draft picks and shrewd trading has catapulted the Yankees system to the top of the league. There’s also more talent on the way as the Yankees signed five of Baseball America’s top 20 international prospects in 2017.

More from New York Yankees

The depth of the New York Yankees farm system helped them achieve such a high ranking from Baseball America but they also have some studs at the top of their system.

The Yankees landed six prospects on Baseball America’s 2018 Top 100 Prospects List. Gleyber Torres (6), Estevan Florial (38), Justus Sheffield (41), Miguel Andujar (59), Albert Abreu (77), and Chance Adams (81) all rank among baseball’s elite minor leaguers.

Torres and Andujar look primed to compete for Opening Day starting jobs in 2018 at second and third base, respectively. Sheffield, Abreu, and Adams could all make their major league debuts in 2018 as well. Florial, the youngest of the group at just 20 years old, likely won’t see the big leagues this season but is one of the fastest rising prospects in baseball and could take over in center field in a few years.

Guys like Thairo Estrada, Domingo Acevedo, Luis Medina, Nick Solak, Clarke Schmidt, Matt Sauer, and Billy McKinney further emphasize the depth of the New York Yankees farm system.

Cashman has used his minor leaguers over the past few years to put together one of the best young major league teams in baseball, whether that be through call-ups or trades. Yet, he’s impressively maintained one of the best farm systems in the league.

The second best, if you ask Baseball America.
