31. Scouting Report. EDGE. 2. player. Pick Analysis. UTSA. Marcus Davenport

James Bettcher’s 3-4 scheme includes two stand-up edge rushers playing outside linebacker. Olivier Vernon is, at least for now, expected to fill one of those positions in a Chandler Jones-type role. The New York Giants roster, however, does not currently have anyone fit for the second outside linebacker spot. That is where Marcus Davenport comes in.

Davenport comes from a small school but has big-time talent.

He has a high motor and constantly disrupts quarterbacks. Davenport was way too talented for Conference USA football and should transfer that success to the next level.

Davenport uses his length (6’7″ 255 lb.) to keep blockers off his body and keeps his hands active to work his way to the quarterback. He has power and speed and can impressively turn his speed into power when rushing the passer.

Our friend Jon Dove over at With the First Pick sees Davenport as a high-upside pass rusher who could also make an immediate impact in the NFL:

"His ability to both push the pocket with his strength and turn the corner with his speed makes Davenport a nightmare to block. He is a quick-twitch athlete who gets off the line of scrimmage in a hurry. This speed helps him attack the edge and flatten out to purse the quarterback. He also features a non-stop motor which results in him always playing until the whistle."

With Olivier Vernon on one side, Davenport would be lined up on the edge with Jason Pierre-Paul inside of him. That’s a lot of talent for offensive tackles to try to block.

The UTSA product has been quickly rising up draft boards and may solidify his status as a first-round pick come April. But as things stand right now, he could conceivably fall to No. 34. Draft Wire ranks Davenport as their No. 35 prospect.

Remember, when you go 3-13, you’re supposed to be able to draft two first-round talents.
