It was announced this week that sports and entertainment marketing guru Vince McMahon will launch the second coming of the XFL in 2020.

The old XFL, well, was a complete failure. It failed to be taken seriously by real football fans and was a disaster.

Wrestling fans would probably argue that McMahon lost his mind a long time ago.

However, it is real and it is happening.

The original XFL only lasted for one season in 2001. It had its failures but also some pretty cool innovations.

XFL has been credited with using the first SkyCam which is a camera angle still loved today.

Even though it is expected that McMahon wants this league taken more seriously, jersey nicknames are still brilliant.

There might not be any “gimmicks” in the new XFL but it is still going to need interesting characters and smart marketing to have it thrive.
