Max Pacioretty could be a useful acquisition for the New York Rangers at the trade deadline.

The NHL trade deadline is looming. We have talked about how our New York Rangers come into a very important stretch of games. These 20 games that started in San Jose will determine whether the Rangers are going to be buyers or sellers at the trading deadline. There are some fans that would like to see them start selling and rebuild this team, and that’s OK. For purposes of this post, we are reflecting on the team if they become buyers.

In that realm, a player that has come up on the radar is Max Pacioretty from the Canadiens. Our friends at Blueline Station, our dedicated Rangers website, have talked about him in a recent post. Therefore it seemed high time for us to jump into the speculation game. Let’s talk about this 29-year-old winger.

More from Empire Writes Back

When you look at Pacioretty, he clearly fills a need. The Rangers go through stretches of having trouble scoring and Max Pacioretty can score. Heading into this season, he has posted 30+ goals in each of the last four seasons. In today’s NHL, that is the definition of a sniper.

Pacioretty is also clutch. Of his 611 career goals, 45 of them have been game-winners. That was over a period of 9+ years. In comparison, Rick Nash has 44 game-winners to his credit but that has taken nearly 15 years for him.

Pacioretty can clearly score and he is only 29 years old.

The question is whether or not this move solves the Rangers problems and puts them over the top.

The short answer to the question is no.

The trouble is the Rangers also have difficulty stopping anybody. We all know it. The movie ends the same way, with Henrik Lundqvist having to stop 800 shots, standing on his head and just giving up enough goals to lose. Acquiring this guy would be great if they can bring in a defenseman as well. To me, the defensive end hasn’t been the same since Dan Girardi left. That needs to change for the Rangers to have any shot this season.
