  • Get it? The “Bass” man. I was going to go with a fishing joke but, never mind.

When putting a team together, the roster cannot be full of stars. Not everybody can put up 100 tackles per season. There must be role players on the team as well.

David Bass filled that role for the Jets in 2017. He signed with the team in late September and made his presence felt immediately. Bass posted his first Jets sack in the first game with the team, September 24th against the Miami Dolphins.

He posted his second sack the following week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yes, the same team that just went to the AFC Championship game. Bass was already making his mark as the real deal.

For the season he posted 3.5 sacks. Bass earned a spot on this team as at the very least, a situational pass rusher. The Jets will always need one of those. Whether or not he becomes a three-down player remains to be seen, but even if he doesn’t, Bass more than fits in as a role player. You always need fresh legs on defense to close out games in the fourth quarter.

If you hadn’t noticed, we weren’t very good at that.
